How does Reiki healing work?

A Reiki Practitioner has been attuned to channel healing energy by a Reiki Master. The practitioner uses the positive power of intention to initialize the flow to Reiki to the client. Reiki healing energy originates from a universal source which is safe and never causes any harm. There are specific hand positions that the practitioner uses and Reiki flows into the body where it is needed the most and initiates the innate healing ability of the body.

Is Reiki healing safe?

Reiki is a safe and non-invasive widespread healing modality that is being practiced in many countries around the globe. Reiki helps to re-synchronize the energy systems of the body and helps to restore optimum health physically, emotionally and spiritually. There are no side effects to Reiki, it can do no harm or be administered in any incorrect way.

Reiki is not a substitute for allopathic medicine and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe medications. If you have a health concern, you should always consult a physician.

 Who developed Reiki?

Dr. Mikao Usui founded the Reiki System of Healing in the early 1900's.

In 1922, Mikao Usui joined a 21 day meditation retreat. On the last day of the retreat, he experienced a spiritual awakening. While standing under a small waterfall on Mt. Kurama in a meditation to open the crown chakra, he felt a powerful light enter his crown. He realized this powerful light had provided him with the gift of a healing ability that did not deplete his own energy. That year he established a healing institute in Tokyo where Reiki was instructed publicly and treatments were offered.

In 1923 a great earthquake was responsible for countless injuries and many people were in suffering. Mikao Usui offered his healing energy to as many of the sufferers as he possibly could and along with his students helped many people relieve their pain and heal. The Emperor Meiji of Japan recognized his devotion.

As his reputation grew, he was offered many opportunities to travel and spread the knowledge of the Usui Reiki System of Healing. During his travels in 1926 he became severely ill and passed away. He was only 62 years old. In the short time between the inception of Reiki and his sudden death, he taught over 2,000 students.

Dr. Usui developed five Reiki ideals that were based on the five principles of the Emperor Meiji. The ideals were intended to promote spiritual healing. Applying continuous effort to heal emotionally and improve our relationship with our peers is a vital component of the Reiki System. The Reiki ideals offer a guide towards living an enjoyable life and acknowledging the beauty and gifts that surround us:

Just for today, I will be diligent with my work
Just for today, I will be kind to others

How will Reiki benefit me?

Reiki provides healing on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.

Physical: back pain, sports injuries, arthritis, muscle tension, insomnia, detoxification, poor circulation, poor digestion, headaches, fatigue and pain.

Emotional: helps to release depression, anxiety, anger, dispel fears/phobias, promote joy/happiness, letting go of insecurities and letting go of trauma.

Mental: relieves stress, addictions, improves mental clarity, concentration, focus and positive self expression.

Spiritual: improves connection to the universe, heightens intuitive processes, gets you in touch with your life's path and improves connection to all things. 

Who can benefit from it?

Reiki is suitable and safe for all people regardless of age, ethnic background, gender or religion. Reiki is also safe during pregnancy. All living organisms including animals and plants can benefit from Reiki healing. Reiki is not a substitute for allopathic medicine, but can be integrated with any other healing modality to support the healing process. Many doctors, natural health care practitioners and hospitals are recognizing the benefits of Reiki healing as a complimentary healing modality.

What takes place during a session?

The client relaxes comfortably on a massage table, fully clothed while Reiki is administered through specific hand positions placed on or above the body. The energy systems of the body including the meridians, chakras and aura are balanced by the Reiki practitioner. The chakras are individually balanced by the practitioner's hands placed on or over these energy centers, allowing for the release of blocked energy thus reestablishing optimum balance.

During a session, the client remains fully clothed at all times and there is never any physical manipulation of the body. 

How often do I need a session?

Reiki is safe and gentle and can be received on a daily basis without any harmful side effects. If a client's condition is chronic, then more sessions should be considered to assist with pain reduction, stress management and emotional discomfort. If the condition is acute, or the client has a general sense of well-being, then fewer sessions may be appropriate. Also, in the healing of unwanted habits and addictions, the client may need to have several sessions to see significant benefits.

What are Chakras?

The word 'chakra' translates to “spinning wheel of energy'. There are seven main chakras of the body - Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral and Root. They are considered "energy vortices" and each chakra vibrates at a different frequency and therefore relates to a different color. The energy from the chakras are channeled to various organs or endocrine glands that correspond to each chakra.

Each chakra reacts and responds to energy and can be blocked due to physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual stresses. If left untreated, this blocked energy may cause a variety physical illnesses.

How often do I need a session?

  1. Be on time for your appointment. If you are late for the session, then it reduces the amount of time needed to do a full healing session. So, to maximize healing benefit, be on time for your appointment.
  2. Time. Allow enough time to get to the session so that you are not in a rushed or frantic state. Best to arrive to the session in a calm and relaxed manner so that you can settle into the session with a clear mind which allows you to focus on the healing you are about to receive instead of your mind racing with thoughts about work, school, family or other concerns. When in a relaxed state, the body can then go into the rest and repair modes of healing.
  3. Come with an open mind and be open to receive the healing. When you are in a receptive state and not attached to specific outcomes, you open yourself up to positive new energy to create healing shifts in wonderful ways you never thought possible. 
  4. Know that every person’s experience will be different. Some people will notice a dramatic shift soon after a session. Whereas, other people may notice a series of gradual shifts over a longer period of time as the healing unfolds. How you heal is unique to you. Honour and celebrate your personal process and progress of healing and the time it takes for you to come back into balance. 
  5. Wear comfortable clothes. This will help you to relax. Tight clothing can create physical tension on the body making it harder to relax and settle into the session.
  6. Consider abstaining from alcohol or recreational drugs 24 hours before your session and for a few days after the session. These substances are hard for the body to precess and can put stress on the body, mind and spirit which can slow down the healing process and affect the healing results of the session.
  7. Allow enough time for sleep and rest after your appointment. After the session, the body can enter into relaxation mode. So allowing more time for rest, and going to sleep earlier on the night of the session, can help the body to shift into a mode where deeper healing, cellular repair and rejuvenation can take place.
  8. Stay well hydrated. Drinking an adequate amount of water in the days following the session, can help to ground you and can help the body to flush out toxins - including physical, emotional and mental toxins as your vibration shifts into a brighter, more positive and vibrant state.
  9. Look at healing from a holistic perspective. Is there something out of balance in your life that you need to take action about to create a healthy change? When things are out of balance in our lives, it can create stress and make us sick. So, oftentimes, healthy changes need to be made regarding lifestyle factors, diet, exercise programs, the home environment, relationship dynamics and work habits..etc to also support the healing process. If something is out of balance in your life and causing you stress or illness, then consider making a healthy change which can have a positive affect on your overall well-being. Remember, you have the power to create positive change and restore balance and health to your life.
  10. Create a solid commitment for healing. It’s very important to be committed to working on your health and well being everyday. We often live busy lives and don’t take time for self care. Make time for your healing and take responsibility for your health to do the work it takes to heal. This can include booking healing sessions as well as follow up sessions, getting medical check ups making healthy lifestyle changes, meditation, exercise and a daily routine of self care so that you can return to a state of wellness.
  11. Book regular follow up healing sessions to optimize health. Be consistent with booking follow up sessions when they are recommended because more than one session is often needed to create long lasting healing results. When you book a series of healing sessions, then it gives you more opportunity to strengthen, come back into balance and heal which can be the key to successful healing. 

What is the difference between Usui Reiki and Karuna Reiki®?

Both are beautiful forms of healing energy that are soothing, relaxing, comforting and rejuvenating. Karuna Reiki® is a system of Reiki that expands upon the Usui system. It works at a deeper spiritual level helping people to align to their true nature and live a more positive and healed compassionate life.

Why do I need to be an Usui Reiki Master before taking the Karuna Reiki® training?

The minimum requirement for the Karuna Reiki® training is to first complete the Usui Reiki Master Level. After a period of six months practicing Usui Master Reiki, then student will be eligible to take the Karuna Reiki training. Students need to have a solid foundation in Usui Reiki before continuing on to Karuna Reiki training.

Why do I have to wait six month after Usui Master training to take Karuna Reiki® classes?

Since Karuna Reiki® is an advanced form of Reiki, you need to practice and integrate the subtle energies of Usui Reiki and to gain experience practicing before taking Karuna Reiki. This ensures a level of expertise, personal self development and commitment for higher learning.
